Carles Barrera, a Valley of Aran spokesman, said he supported a joint candidacy of Spain (the Catalan Pyrenees and Jaca), Andorra and France for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Barrera believes that by everyone pulling together, the region could host the 2014 Games, which would promote the Pyrenees to the world.

A spokesman for the Baqueira Beret winter sports resort said that it would be ready to support a 2014 bid, calling it “fantastic and extraordinary”.

Joan Ganyet, the mayor of La Seu de Urgell, believes that with a joint candidacy the region would pass the first cut. Ganyet said, “we have to give an image of unity, since this is transcendental to obtaining” the Games.

Ganyet said with individual bids the cities are eliminated from the race. Ganyet was referring to the recent bids of Jaca and Andorra.

Ganyet will be speaking to Andorra’s Marc Forme and the mayor of Jaca about the proposal and is requesting an interview with the president of Aragon, Marcelino Iglesias, and the president of the French Department of Midi Pirenees.

Andorra’s government is interested in the proposal but wants to know more details. Write or read comments about this article
