GamesBids.com Announces Release Of BidIndex 2012
GamesBids.com will be releasing the initial BidIndex results for the 2012 Olympic Games bid on Monday, January 12. BidIndex is a mathematical model developed by GamesBids.com that compares current bids with successful bids from the past in an attempt to measure its potential for success.
History shows that sports events bids are not won on quality alone but are also subject to a myriad of other influences including geo-politics, timing and other international events and issues. Of the 120-plus International Olympic Committee (IOC) voters, each have their own biases and agendas and are not polled prior to the final vote - so results are often unpredictable. BidIndex quantifies these factors and applies them to a normalized formula to rate the potential of each bid based on IOC preferences and on an even scale.
During the campaign and as bid and IOC fundamentals change, BidIndex ratings will fluctuate. The ratings are based on available information, which is initially scarce. As more data becomes available through the release of bid books and other means, BidIndex will begin to stabilize and provide more meaningful results.
For the 2010 Winter Games campaign, BidIndex had rated all four bids that were excluded from the final shortlist as dissimilar to past successful bids with a relatively low chance of success. In the latter days of the campaign BidIndex improved the rating of PyeongChang by almost ten points putting it in the same class as the frontrunners, while many experts discounted the Korean bid as a threat entirely. At the end, PyeongChang showed their appeal to Olympic voters by defeating the favorites on the first ballot before narrowly losing by two votes on the final ballot. Vancouver had been given a strong BidIndex rating and won the election.
For the 2008 bid, BidIndex revealed that Beijing showed strong similarities to past successful bids while Toronto had moderate similarities. Beijing won the bid handily.
It's impossible to answer the question "which bid WILL win?" with certainty, but with BidIndex you will be able to answer the question "which bids CAN win?" with confidence.
Full details and results for Paris, Leipzig, New York, Moscow, Istanbul, Havana, London, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro will be available Monday, January 12.
