GamesBids.com presents the fourth annual Top Ten list of Olympic Bid Stories for 2011. These stories impacted the course of Olympic bids, or the Olympic bid process, and formed interesting plotlines for the year. We'll run them down from 10th to 1st during the holiday season.
Top Olympic Bid Stories of 2011: #9 Overflow of interested applicants to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games
After mixed reviews of the outcome of the inaugeral Youth Olympic Games in 2010 held in Singapore - interest in the Games seemed to wane. In fact, the #3 story on the 2010 top 10 list discussed the lack of interest in bidding for the Youth Olympic Games.
But when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) opened the application process for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, something changed.
Many cities raised their hands and claimed to be actively pursuing the necessary approvals in order to submit applications in time for the March 1, 2012 deadline. The IOC will not reveal what cities have already submitted completed applications, and will not do so until the deadline has passed - so we won't know how serious each potential bid is until next year.
But to date, there has been reported interest from Dubai, Glasgow, Monterrey in Mexico, Medellin in Colombia, Russia and Azerbaijan (jointly), Abuja in Nigeria, Dagestan in Russia, Buenos Aires in Argentina, The Hague in Netherlands and possibly an unannounced U.K. city.
The next summer Youth Games will be in Nanjing, China in 2014. Lillehammer won the 2016 Winter Games unopposed.
