GamesBids.com presents the third annual Top Ten list of Olympic Bid Stories for 2010.  These stories impacted the course of Olympic bids, or the Olympic bid process, and formed interesting plotlines for the year.  We'll run them down from 10th to 1st during the holiday season.

Top Olympic Bid Stories of 2010: #3 Lillehammer Sole Bidder For 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games

In April, Lillehammer Norway was the only bid put forward for the 2nd Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2016.  Amid some confusion, it seemed the IOC left the door open for other potential bidders beyond the original deadline but in December, the International Olympic Committee confirmed that Lillehammer was accepted as the lone candidate for these Games.  The bid will be evaluated and a final decision will be made on October 2011.

Nine cities had applied for the inaugeral Summer version of the event that opened this past August in Singapore to mixed reviews; and the first Winter Games is scheduled for Innsbruck in 2012 - four cities applied to host those Games.

The lack of bidders seems to reflect diminished interest in these Games; Singapore 2010 was critisized for high costs and a lack of international media attention.

Lake Placid, U.S.A. has already voiced interest in hosting the 2020 Youth Winter Games and the success of the Innsbruck Games may dictate whether there will be additional bidders in that campaign, and whether this event will remain viable.
