Top Olympic Bid Stories of 2009: #10 Maldives 2024?
For the second year, GamesBids.com is releasing our list of Top Ten Olympic Bid Stories for 2009. These stories, from the mainstream to the obscure, impacted the course of Olympic bids and formed an interesting plotline for 2009.
#10 - The Maldives to bid for the 2024 Olympics
This story was so obscure that it was never published on GamesBids.com before now, but we thought it merited a mention on our list. This unlikely bid was devised to make a point at the Copenhagen 2009 Climate Change Summit in December.
The Huffington Post reported that the President of The Maldives Mohamed Nasheed announced at the summit that his country will bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. But since the tiny nation is expected to be underwater by then, the venues would have to be modified for a submerged environment.
If this didn't reflect such a terrifying reality, it would have made for great April Fools' Day article.
